Keelung Map

The National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) is a highly recognized academic institution in Taiwan in marine sciences, maritime studies, fisheries, and aquaculture. It is located in ZhongZheng District in Keelung City, in the northern part of Taiwan. Keelung City is separated from its neighboring county by mountains in the east, west, and south. NTOU, being situated in Keelung, is known to be a sea and land hub of Taiwan and bordered by mountains as it faces out towards the sea, which is an excellent natural harbor with deep water.

 

The following are the prominent places in Keelung City where you can explore and visit:

  • Heping Island Park: Its location is on the eastern side of Keelung Harbor with a diverse sea-eroded landscape featuring wave-cut platforms, tofu rocks, sea-eroded caves, mushroom rocks. Visitors can view the strange rocks in a pristine state.
  • Zengbin Fishing Port: It is the biggest harbor in Taiwan early in the Japanese Colonial Period. It is powered by the development of Keeling's fishing industry. It is now transformed into a weekend/holiday tourist wharf. There are dozens of painted huts around the harbor and became more popular with social media enthusiasts.
  • Agenna Ship Yard. It is located next to Heping Bridge that connects Keelung and Heping Island. It is a dilapidated ruin and a private property abandoned for years. This place was featured in the 2014 Hollywood Film Captain America and has been filmed a game trailer of Call of Duty. In the Japanese Colonial era, the site was originally adapted as a dock for loading placers.
  • Yang Ming Oceanic Culture and Art Museum. It is built during the Japanese Colonial Period and was originally owned by the Japanese NYK Line. At present, it exhibits exhibitions on different periods and introductions of various ocean cultural resources. It also equipped with a simulator that gives visitors a realistic feel of how it is like to operate a ship, which is an added fun experience.
  • Keeling Maritime Plaza and Harbor: It is an important marine transport hub of Northern Taiwan and has a modern harbor for both military and commercial functions. It also has Taiwan's main cruise ship port where large cruise ships can be seen entering and leaving the harbor.
  • Keelung Cultural Center: It has a collection of more than 200 indigenous cultural relics and traditional everyday items such as clothes, hunting equipment, rattan woven items, wood carvings, bead jewelry, musical instruments, and pottery. It also displays indigenous arts which showcases Taiwan's indigenous culture and people.
  • Miaokou Night Market. It is a commercial area with over 200 stalls that sells clothes, shoes, snacks, and more. Though there a shops during the daytime, its life is at night. Famous Taiwanese traditional snacks and foods are found here.
  • Wangyou Valley: It is located in Badouzi and has a wooden-plank train with stunning mountain and sea views. It displays a sea-eroded terrain of the North Coast. You can see the grassy Wangyou Valley, Badouzi Fishing Harbor, and the blue sea with its beautiful mountain view.
  • National Museum of Marine Science & Technology (NMST):   The building was mentioned in the New York Times 2014 as one of the places to visit in Taiwan which provides a variety of ocean-related information. It has nine theme halls or galleries: Marine Environment, Marine Science, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Fishery Science, People and the Sea, Deep Sea Theater, Wonders of the Deep Sea, Kid's Exploration Zone, and its Special Exhibition Gallery.

Keelung is adjacent to New Tapei City with various scenic places to also visit.
